Weekly Communion

“Then they told what had happened to them on the road, and how Jesus had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.”

(Acts 24:35)

The Lord’s Supper is a mystery that goes by many names: holy communion, eucharist, the breaking of the bread, the divine liturgy.  Whatever name it goes by, the Supper has been seen from the beginning as a gift from God to the church. As the disciples on the road to Emmaus were shocked to discover (Acts 24), Jesus is revealed in the breaking of the bread!

Jesus is still revealed in the breaking of the bread!

At St. John’s Church we celebrate communion every Sunday because we believe that in the Lord’s Supper faith is deepened. The Supper is a sign of God’s covenant with the church, but it is more than a sign.  Because  the communion is real, God’s life passes to us and becomes ours.  We are spiritually fed in the Supper.

Prayer: Lord, keep our hearts open to all the goodness you intend for us, especially as you offer Christ to us, and all the treasures of grace in the Lord’s Supper.  Help us learn to not depend on our own strength, but to depend on you. Empower us to do the work of the church. Amen.
