Amos Sermon Series

AmosFor 10-weeks in February & March, St. John’s is seeking God through worship, study, prayer and conversation around the prophet Amos. Though our study is centered on life at St. John’s, you don’t even have to worship with us to join us in listening for God’s voice. (See below for more on how you might participate.)

The God Amos hears doesn’t come as a still small voice; instead, the God of Amos’ roars like a lion. The God we find in Amos doesn’t congratulate us for who we are; instead God challenges our worship when accompanied by moral complacency and disregard for the poor. We are prepared for this to be a tough and transformative series as God re-orients our lives to share God’s priorities.

Amos assumes that our relationship with God is at the center of our lives, which means that listening to God through Amos is not just about figuring out the right things to do, it’s about restoring the lives God created us for. In fact, the message we hear in Amos is the experience we encounter fully in Jesus: “I have come that you might have life, and have it fully!” (John 10:10).

How You Can Be Involved:

Weekly Emails. The weekly emails during our study of Amos will include reflections on Scripture and assignments that relate to the text. Studies have shown that people remember most of what they do and very little of what they hear. Amos will challenge us to live, not just think, in different ways.  Sign-up on this page to the right!

Bible Study. On Wednesday nights St. John’s gathers to study the Scripture verses for the upcoming Sunday. We believe the Holy Spirit works through each of us as we listen to the text and each other. During Amos we hope everyone will recommit to Wednesday nights and try to make all ten meetings.

Worship. After thinking and talking about the text during the week, we gather on Sunday with the expectation that we will encounter God in our worship. If you can’t be with us on Sunday, you can listen to the sermons online.

Artistic Response:

Several members of St. John’s are using the text of Amos to inspire artistic expressions and to motivate creative reflection. Fred Wise has drawn this image below based on the dramatic imagery from this expressive prophet. We encourage you to use this drawing as you read the text and as you pray through the words and images of Amos.
