Welcome!

St. John’s is a community of people following Jesus Christ into God’s welcome and love.

Who are we?

St. John’s is a warm, welcoming congregation, including a wide mix of folks of all ages and types.  We come together out of love for Jesus Christ and a desire to be with Jesus’ family.  No matter what you are used to (or if you’ve ever been a part of a church before) you are guaranteed to experience something unexpected at St. John’s!  If you are interested in learning more, take a minute to read our story and our foundation.

What to expect?

Coming to a new place to worship can be awkward and confusing.  We hope that a little bit of info will help your worship time at St. John’s to be less an experience of discomfort and more an opportunity to worship the living God.

For 11 a.m. worship, we hope you’ll wear whatever makes you feel comfortable. We have a wide range—from jeans and sneakers to business suits and dresses. We encourage everyone to “come as you are” to worship because that is how God receives us in grace, just as we are.

The musical style at St. John’s is a blend of hymn-singing, contemporary songs, and gospel music, which expresses the musical loves and traditions of our members.  We hope that you will learn some new songs at St. John’s, as you also discover new ways of seeing, loving, and worshiping God.  Our weekly worship includes many elements of Christian worship that have been practiced by the church for centuries, including confession, the creed, communion, and community prayers.

If you have children, your first stop is to check-in at the church house, the brick building to the left of the sanctuary.  During worship, your children will receive wonderful care from one of our Children’s Ministry volunteers.  Children from nursery to second grade will experience the loving welcome of God through the hands, mouths, and hearts of these volunteers.

Is it just Sundays?

No way!  We don’t like to go a whole week without being together!  God’s love and calling infuses every single day of our lives, and we try to live this out in our church’s life together.  Every Wednesday night, groups of St. John’s folks gather in homes around Durham to study scripture and share life together.  These groups are intentionally designed for new people to come and feel welcome—including you!  People with questions, doubts, fears and brokenness are welcomed and encouraged to come because this is what our lives are really like, including the lives of our members, pastors, and leaders.  As we struggle with God’s Word together honestly and joyfully, we also discover the places in our lives that are uncertain, confused, and needing healing.  We trust that together, we can grow into more faithful followers of Jesus.
